Appellations
of Mendocino County:
Anderson Valley
Up north in Mendocino County, just above the border with Sonoma
County, lies Anderson Valley – almost as famous for its
beer as it is for wine. Anderson Valley stretches from the town
of Booneville in the east, all the way to the Pacific Ocean in
the west. Sheep and cattle dominated the gently rolling hill country
in times past but these days about 13,000 acres have been converted
to wine grape cultivation. The combination of elevation (about
375 ft) and climate (strong marine influence) in Anderson Valley
make it the coolest in which grapes can be successfully grown.
Signature grapes of the Anderson Valley include Pinot Noir &
Chardonnay (used for the increasingly popular sparkling wines),
Syrah, Riesling and Gewürztraminer. A napa wine tour along
scenic Hwy 128 will reward the |
