Los
Carneros
Los Carneros is the only appellation to straddle both Sonoma County
and Napa County. This southerly, low-lying rolling grass country
was once home to flocks of grazing sheep, hence the name –
“Carneros”, which is Spanish for “Ram.”
Because of its proximity to San Pablo Bay and the resulting cool
and windy climate, Los Carneros is known for its exceptional Chardonnay
and Pinot Noir grapes. In recent years, Merlot has also proved
well adapted to the Los Carneros wine country region. Because
Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the favorite grapes for sparkling
wine, many of the world’s finest champagne cellars are located
in Los Carneros, including Gloria Ferrer and Domaine Carneros.
Due to its world-class reputation and proximity
to San Francisco, the Los Carneros is a favorite destination for
many Wine Country tours from San Francisco. |
