Northern
Sonoma
The Northern Sonoma wine country district is actually a catch-all
appellation (much like the huge “Napa Valley” wine
district) that allows certain Sonoma wineries with non-contiguous
properties to use the federally regulated term “Estate Produced”
by including all estate lands into one officially recognized AVA
(American Viticultural Area).
The California Wine Country region, ‘Northern
Sonoma’ encompasses a large swath of northern / central
Sonoma County that includes all or part of several other appellations
such as the Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander
Valley and Chalk Hill. As a result the Northern Sonoma is known
for a very wide range of varietals, from the cooler climate wine
grapes like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to the warmer loving Sauvignon
Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel.
