Sonoma Wine Country Tours from San Francisco are a wonderful way to become introduced with the California Wine Country. The main difference between the Napa Wine Country and the Sonoma Wine Country are the size of the wineries and the number of tourists. Napa valley became famous in the 1970 during a blind taste competition held by the French in which a couple of Napa Wineries won over their French rivals.

Needless to say, that event caused great interest in the Californian Wine Country since until then the Wine Country in the U.S. was concidered to be of mediocre quality. All of the media publicity came down on the Napa Valley leaving the Sonoma Valley largely ignored even though equal quality wines were being produced.

The result of this event is that the Napa Wine Coutry has grown at a much faster rate than the Sonoma Wine Country. That means that there are larger wineries in the Napa Valley with more visitors and tourists. The Sonoma Wine Country has remained relatively undiscovered and Sonoma Wine Country tours offer insight to smaller, family owned and operated wineries as opposed to large multi-national public companies that have a bit less charm to them. This is a mere generalization and you can find small wineries in Napa Valley that wil have tasting rooms that provide customers with personalized, intimate service. You can also find large wineries in the Sonoma Wine Country that are less personal but in general that's the rule of thumb.
